We have only still photographs of Elvis before he appeared with the then-reigning TV variety shows run by Steve Allen and Ed Sullivan. Director Kim Hubbard, costumer Jimmy Johansmeyer and lighting designer Joel Rand Pape have studied those carefully, getting Evans up on his toes in white loafers, tilting back with microphone in hand, with all the authentic Eisenhower-era jackets and blazers. Evans doesn't get to the white jump suit or gold lame until the second act. He dons black leather only for one number, I Can't Help Falling in Love With You. ... Ooh, now that's what I've been waiting for. I like that.
