If these kids had to choose between playing offense or defense, I think most of them would choose defense. It's always been that way, even when I played here (Nelson is a 1983 Fertile-Beltrami graduate). It's just the mentality we've always had - getting after things, swarming to the ball, laying in the hits.
I'll always remember that last game of my senior year (1992) against SigourneyKeota. SigourneyKeota hadn't been scored on in the first half all season and they were ranked No. 1. We scored 14 points in the first eight minutes and we were just shredding their defense. They scored to tie it with two minutes left and Ryan Richards stopped them short on the twopoint attempt. But we fumbled the kickoff and they recovered it and scored to win. I felt so bad for my Dad. I'm 30 now and not a day goes by that that game doesn't pop up in my mind.
