Appearances to the mind are of four kinds. Things either are what they appear to be; or they neither are, nor appear to be; or they are, and do not appear to be; or they are not, and yet appear to be. Rightly to aim in all these cases is the wise man’s task.

Fashion is a tool… to compete in life outside the home. People like you better, without knowing why, because people always react well to a person they like the looks of.

Advancement often depends not on rightness of action, but on acceptable behavior and image, e.g., self-control, appearance and dress, perception as a team player, style and patron of power. The result of all this is ethical erosion.
